Storm Drains
By Johnny Cumbelich
Item 2 (Handout 1)
Main Purpose
-Creating a turbine with maximum efficiency
-Harnessing energy that would otherwise be wasted
-Design goals
-most revolutions per second
-allow for debris to pass through easily
-Lowest maintenance
Rationale
-Humanity’s Carbon footprint has greatly impacted
the world, and continues to.
-Water power is a clean, year-round energy source
-Energy is constantly in demand
-And demand is only growing
-AI data centers, EVs, etc
-Will provide small-scale hydro powered electricity
without emitting carbon or methane.
Background Research
-Turbines were installed in 2018 by Lucid Motors in Portland.
The downside to this design is that it needed manholes on
the ground level to be installed for access to a walking space
below ground. This was for the maintenance of the
generators below ground and electrical systems.
-The only turbines that were used thus far are small-scale
turbines and even then, they are not used by commercial
companies.
-Attempts at creating turbines which harnessed water power
were expensive, and had to have specialized piping to
accommodate the turbine.
Experimentation
The mph of the rotating turbine was taken, and data was kept from 8
different trials, After which, I attained the mean of the mph of the
turbine. Along with the mass of the turbine, about .50 lbs, I was able to
calculate the Joules and Watts per second. Once I obtained the measure
of Watts per second along with the Electron volts per second, I converted
the eV to V by multiplying the Electron Volts per second by the conversion
factor of 1.602176634 x 10^-19 V.
My calculations didn’t come out as planned, because of malfunction with the
app. Thai was not that big of a problem because the voltage was not my main
concern for the experimentation this year.
Future Research
The results I came up with from my experiment are just
estimates of electrical output from my turbines in the
initial stages of the development of this idea. Design,
functionality and installation will be ironed out in the
years to come. Demand for clean energy will have this
product installed in many cities and towns, once the
design has been ironed out and declared able to
harness the maximum energy available.
