SUBJECT: INNOVATIONS FAIR WINNER PRESENTATION
Central San held an Innovations Fair October 18, 2023. A new, permanently mounted global positioning
system (GPS) base station at Collection System Operations (CSO)took the top prize. Central San's
Survey group Greg St. John, Kelly Weir, and Chris Pentes collaborated with Electrical Technicians Nate
Hill and Mark Turner, Machinist Josh Powell, CSO Senior Engineer Jason DeGroot, System Administrator
Jose Vega, and their supervisors (Sean Sullivan, Bill Bowers, and Matt Hart)to develop an in-house
project. The station provides a more accurate and consistent reference point for land surveys, saving time
previously required for control surveys. The upgraded signal also allows the Survey team to work more
efficiently near large buildings and trees that can block GPS signals.

The presentation on the new GPS base station will be given by Greg St. John.

The Background

_ Q
Central San has been using GPS since
2006.
Geographic locations are calculated
using distances from known satellite
positions. ® ti
Elevations for Central San projects are _,,,,
derived using GPS techniques.
"Base Stations"transmit corrections to
"Rover Positions" in the field.
The New ..
Developments ' "`
New Chinese and European
constellations are available to augment
United States and Russian satellites.
New hardware is being used to take
advantage of planned improvements to
the global satellite system.
Central San can reduce private
subscription costs by constructing its
own "base stations".

The Project ,
The Steps:
1 Purchased the hardware
2 Selected and tested the location
Modified & constructed conduits
Made the project cyber-secure
Designed and constructed the "Base

The Results
Two times the number of satellites f
available '
Less effort deriving elevations
More data under tree canopy and near
buildings °
More topographic surveying using GPS
(as opposed to Total Station) '
Less opportunity for theft
More consistency between projects
Thank You!
