PROJECT UPDATES
1) Steam Turbine Generator site visit at University of California-San Diego on
December 12, 2023
As a part of the Steam Renovations - Phase 1 District Project 100032, and in coordination
with the long-term solids strategy developed as part of the Solids Handling Facility
Improvements - Phase 2 District Project 100030, Central San’s Engineering, Operations,
and Maintenance staff have been evaluating a steam turbine generator (STG) to diversify
energy recovery equipment and generate renewable electricity. If Central San transitions
to new electric blowers as the lead blowers (steam -driven blowers are currently lead), a
STG will convert surplus steam into electricity. The next steps to complete a cost and
benefit analysis are identifying the optimal timing and location for a STG installation. The
installation could be after electrical infrastructure upgrades or as part of a new solids
handling facility.
Central San staff will be visiting the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Central
Utilities Plant to learn from their Operations and Engineering staff about benefits and
challenges of operating an STG. The STG at UCSD is of a similar size as equipment
identified to meet Central San’s need during preliminary evaluations. The following
Central San staff will be at the UCSD visit:
Nitin Goel, Operations Optimization Division Manager
Edgar Lopez, Capital Projects Division Manager
Neil Meyer, Plant Maintenance Division Manager
Clint Shima, Plant Maintenance Senior Engineer
Michael Allen, Plant Operations Provisional Superintendent
Michael Cunningham, Operations Optimization Associate Engineer
Rob Linne, Operations Optimization Utility Systems Engineer
Staff attendance for this site visit is included in the Fiscal Year 2022-23 Steam
Renovations - Phase 1 Project Budget.
OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL
2) Staff to attend the ReSoLve Workshop at The Water Tower in Buford,
Georgia, from Thursday, December 7 to Saturday, December 9, 2023
Resource Recovery Program Manager, Melody LaBella, will be attending this invitation-
only workshop, which is a learning experience focused on 30 women leaders in the water
sector who are interested in creating a stronger working environment to support the next
generation of women leaders in water, their peers, and themselves. The program is
dedicated to addressing unconscious bias, moving beyond mentoring to allyship, and
finding ways to prioritize self -care for healthy work-life integration. This in-person
workshop will kick-off a two-year program that will be conducted virtually moving forward.
