E nergy Usage - March 2023 May 4, 2023 Regular Board Meeting Agenda Packet - Page 208 of 218 Page 1 of 4 Attachment 1 Board Meeting of May 4, 2023 General Manager Written Announcements ENERGY CONSUMPTION 1) First Quarter Update on Central San’s Energy Usage Central San actively tracks greenhouse (GHG) emissions to optimize the use of energy at its facilities in the most cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner. Attachment 2 provides an energy dashboard that contains a breakdown of Central San’s energy usage for the month of March 2023 along with a comparison of the energy used during the first quarter of the calendar year. The chart shows the cost breakdown of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and Marin Clean Energy (MCE) electricity. EMPLOYEE EVENTS 2) Recap of Bring a Child to Work Day held Thursday, April 13 2023 Central San’s Bring a Child to Work Day (BCWD) was held on Thursday, April 13, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event started in Central San’s Multi-Purpose Room with activities spread throughout the Martinez campus. BCWD blends experiential STEM- based learning with fun to create an impactful day for each child that may help lead them on a path toward a future water sector career. Approximately 121 children attended ranging in age from 3 to 17. It was the biggest group hosted at Central San. The families watched the Central San produced “Disappearing Act” educational video about what not to put down the toilet, followed by a discussion, then General Manager Roger S. Bailey provided a welcome to the children. Each child was given a “no access” badge for the day with their names and the name of the parent/guardian. The children received a drawstring bag that included educational items, and the younger children received a t-shirt that read “Future GM”. Activities for the day included arts and crafts, press-on tattoos, an interactive Lab Station, Board Room bingo, a photo booth, Toot the Toilet water activities , activities at Flushing Meadows, and a chance to view CSO trucks up close. Children over 10 years old went on a Plant Tour and were then split into teams to participate in an educational Scavenger Hunt. The day ended with lunch and a wrap up session, and a presentation of prizes to the Scavenger Hunt winners. Feedback on the event was extremely positive and employees were very grateful that Central San sponsors this event. There will be a post event survey circulated to all employees, even those that did not participate, to see how Central San can improve the event and flow, and to find out what events need to be brought back in 2024. There is money included in Human Resource’s budget each year for this event. PROJECT UPDATES 3) Public Bidding of Aeration Unit 1 Steam Turbine Overhaul, District Project 100054 Central San has two steam turbines that are used as the primary source for aeration air to the secondary process at the treatment plant. During normal operations, one unit is continuously on while the other is the backup. Last year, Turbine No. 2 required significant maintenance and overhaul work under urgent conditions. Staff recommends performing similar activities and inspection of Turbine No. 1. These turbines were last overhauled in 2004 and the proposed work will continue reliable and safe operations of this critical equipment. This project will be advertised on May 17 and 24, 2023. The bid opening is scheduled on June 7, 2023. The construction cost is estimated at $1,000,000. More information will be presented when the Board is asked to approve the contract on July 6, 2023.
