BAILEY, GENERAL MANAGER SUBJECT: RECEIVE RECAP OF THE 2022 POLLUTION PREVENTION AWARDS, INCLUDING RECYCLED WATER CHAMPIONS, WATER QUALITY COMMUNITY PARTNERS, POLLUTION PREVENTION PARTNER, AND POLLUTION PREVENTION AWARD WINNERS In conjunction with National Pollution Prevention Week each year, Central San honors businesses and residents for their exceptional efforts to go beyond compliance to minimize water pollution and protect the environment. Since the pollution prevention awards program was initiated in 1992, Central San has recognized hundreds of local businesses and residents. As in recent years, Central San provided awards in the categories of Recycled Water Champions, Water Quality Community Partners, Pollution Prevention Partner, and Pollution Prevention Award Winners. The winners were presented with their awards at Sustainable Contra Costa's Annual Leadership in S ustainability Awards Gala held on September 22, 2022. Staff is providing this update as an informational item only. Upon development of the site,they connected to Central San's recycled water system to irrigate their landscaping with a plan to use at least 145,000 p EMEFGENCY gallons of recycled water per year. . + � Thank you,SAGE,for caring for our pets and conserving water! Miroslav Borissov ' Pacheco .� From July 2021 to June 2022,Miroslav Borissov visited Central San's recycled water fill station 361 times-now that's commitment! This resulted in Miroslav collecting 99,275 gallons of recycled ' water. 1- a Thank you,Miroslav,for being a frequent and dedicated recycled water customer! The community also promotes pollution prevention ` by airing Central San's Public Service Announcements on Rossmoor TV.Providing a platform for these messages is a great way to , educate residents on how they can help protect our - pipes and the environment. October 6, 2022 Regular Board Meeting Agenda Packet- Page 293 of 317 5 Page 7 of 9 POLLUTION PREVENTION AWARD WINNERS X 2022 PO y PREVENTION - AWARDS p Pollution Prevention Award Winner Dr.Bita L.Matin,DDS Concord Dr.Bita L.Matin is leading the way in the dental industry by investing in new technologies that exemplify pollution prevention.Since 2016,her practice has replaced highly -- toxic,"cold sterilization"chemicals used for instrument - cleaning with steam sterilization;transitioned x-ray imaging ' from wet-chemistry film development to digital technology;and replaced mercury-containing tooth filling with composite material to reduce mercury pollution. Dr.Matin also sought out substitutes for single-use plastic items such as suction tubes and is moving to biodegradable J models made from renewable sugarcane.Additionally, Dr.Matin and her staff implemented more frequent routine \ maintenance of equipment that removes mercury from wastewater discharged to the sanitary sewer. October 6, 2022 Regular Board Meeting Agenda Packet- Page 294 of 317 6 Page 8 of 9 Pollution Prevention Award Winner Red Ox Clay Studio Concord Red Ox Clay Studio is a ceramic arts studio offering ---` ----- classes for all experience levels.To prevent wastes ~ � y they wash tools and equipment in a 3-can series, ;�rq� _ - • allowing clay to settle out of the wash water so it can �w be reprocessed into usable product.They use the -° -p'IF dirtiest water from the first can to water plants and * dispose of the residual through a pretreatment device {' to the sanitary sewer.Wash water from the second and third cans is then moved up in the cleaning _ sequence,saving fresh water.Clay solids captured by ; 1 the pretreatment device and leftover scrap clay are also reclaimed for future use.Through these practices, 40 ®® ' the studio is conserving resources and reducing costs as a bonus. Rising Loafer Cafe&Bakery is a second-time Pollution Prevention .4r.__, m Award winner.Nearly a decade after their first win in 2013,they continue their commitment to pollution prevention and sustainability.The cafe and bakery use Central San's recycled - water and waste liquids such as water,coffee,and tea to water -'r the plants and flowers on their patio.Staff also reuses paper flour bags as trash bags instead of single-use plastic. Fun Fact:Rising Loafer collects fruit and vegetable waste to feed the chickens at the Lafayette Community Garden(LCG).In turn, the LCG's happy hens yield eggs used in the cafe's cooking and baking.Through these and other commonsense efforts,this I Pollution Prevention Award Winner is making the most of its resources while protecting the environment!
