REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
2) San Francisco Bay Regional Water Board unanimously adopts new Five-Year
NPDES Permit for Central San
Central San's new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit was
adopted unanimously by the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Board on June 8, 2022,
after giving Central San many kudos for its great work. This concluded a strategic process
that began in early 2021. The permit will become effective on August 1 , 2022, and expire
on July 31, 2027. Central San staff is confident the intensive, collaborative efforts of staff,
consultants from EOA, Inc., and the Regional Water Board led to the development of an
appropriate permit, one that is both protective and practical, for Central San's operations.
The internal permit renewal negotiation team, led by Environmental and Regulatory
Compliance Division Manager Lori Schectel, included key contributions from a core group:
Laboratory Administrator Mary Lou Esparza, Laboratory Supervisor Blake Brown, and
Assistant Engineer Khang Nguyen. Additional acknowledgements go to collaborators from
the Environmental Compliance and Regulatory Compliance groups, Laboratory, Planning
Engineers, Plant Operations, Plant Maintenance, Capital Projects, the GIS Team,
Resource Recovery Program Manager Melody LaBella, Collection System Operations,
administrative staff, as well as the directors and District Counsel Kent Alm.
