Net zero refers to a state in which the GHG emissions going into the atmosphere are balanced by removal out of the atmosphere. Generally, emissions are bounded by a `scoped' approach: Scope 1 — direct entity-owned or controlled GHG emissions occurring at the source; Scope 2 — GHG emissions associated with the production of energy consumed by an entity; and Scope 3 — indirect GHG emissions associated with an entity's activities from sources not owned or controlled by the entity.
