Central San Board, and fellow coworkers, 1 of 3
1 am the leader of my workgroup. I can do most of my work from home. But I choose a better Work-Life
Balance and come to the office every day. With the recent talk about getting people to return to the
office, it's natural for some employees to resist. But the real reasons to go back to the office are not
necessarily for Central San, it's also for the employee's health and wellbeing, belonging and social
identity, career development and performance, happiness and fulfilment.
For example:
A lot of information sharing happens through short, informal conversations between people over the
course of a normal workday. It's important to engage frequently with your coworkers and be exposed
to informal learning opportunities. Would you prefer walking across the hallway to a co-worker's desk
to share an insightful idea, or schedule a video call? Nothing quite beats a face-to-face meeting with
colleagues,they're more engaging and fulfilling.
Spending time with colleagues in the office reinforces the sense that you share a common mission and
core values. It'll be a lot easier to maintain strong company loyalty and positive retention rates when
employees return to the office.
Interactions with the newest hires are particularly important. They'll learn a lot both from their
conversations with you as well as their observations. It's hard for entry-level workers to get socialized
into the office culture with a remote work environment.
Interacting in person on a daily basis helps employees foster relationships, build trust, collaborate more
successfully, network, and advance within the organization, which in turn drives workers' productivity
and morale.
Fewer employees take sick days when they work from home. But that isn't necessarily a good thing.
When you have to physically show up to the office to do your job, taking a sick day means you actually
get to focus on your recovery, not your work.
A 9 to 5 job permits employees to set goals for the day before they sign off, go to their private life, be
with family, and relax for the evening.
We all get so much more out of working together and sharing in the challenges, interactions, and
comradery. It's a better Work-Life Balance for everyone. It's time to get back to what works best, and
start doing the district's business together again.

Dear Board members,
I want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for going above
and beyond during the COVID pandemic to keep employees safe. It's
obvious from your many actions how much you care about staff.
I hope you will soon make another great decision by supporting the
implementation of a hybrid schedule option. An overwhelming majority
of public agencies in the Bay Area have figured this out and are
implementing a 2-day per week hybrid option and CCCSD needs to do
so as well - for many great reasons, including remaining competitive in
the labor market, retaining great employees by improving their work-life
balance, reducing air pollution, and more.
Implementing additional flexible schedule options for employees,
including hybrid, won't cure our morale problem, but it will go a long way
in helping to mitigate the impact of the toxic work environment at
CCCSD.
Thank you for your consideration.

The solution to the equity issue is flexibility for all, whether it's 9/80s,
4/10s, 7-days on/6-days off, hybrid, or flexing hours.
