The Honorable Jeff Merkley The Honorable Susan Collins
U.S. Senate U.S. Senate
Washington D.C., 20510 Washington D.C., 20510
Dear Senators Merkley and Collins:
On behalf of the undersigned organizations, we write to express our support for the Wastewater
Infrastructure Pollution Prevention and Environmental Safety(WIPPES)Act. This bipartisan legislation takes a
straightforward and reasonable approach to addressing the pervasive, but ultimately preventable pollution
problem stemming from the improper disposal of non-flushable wipes in the nation's wastewater systems. We
look forward to working with you to secure passage of the legislation this year.
The wipes industry and the clean water sectors believe the legislation will advance our mutually shared
interest to protect public infrastructure and the environment by promoting responsible disposal habits. The
WIPPES Act's common sense "Do Not Flush" labeling requirements for non-flushable wipes packaging
establishes a simple source management solution through consistent on-package consumer education. The
legislation's education and outreach grants program assists clean water agencies and other nonprofits and
local jurisdictions to inform ratepayers of proper disposal methods and is vital to the successful behavior
change aspect of dealing with this persistent pollution problem.
Thank you for your leadership to address and develop common-sense and bipartisan solutions to the unique
problems related to the flushing of non-flushable wipes. We look forward to working with you in the coming
months to advance this legislation into national law.
Sincerely,
Dave Rousse Adam Link
