COMMENT/SPEAKER CARD 1D#1 175
Submitted on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 - 3:32pm
I wish to submit a written comment.
Members of the Board,
I am writing to you regarding the District's Covid response, and
specifically the Board policy about the vaccine mandate. The adopted
Board policy starts with this statement:
PURPOSE
In order to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known
hazards, the District is adopting a mandatory coronavirus (COVID-19)
vaccination policy. This policy is intended to safeguard the health of our
employees and their families; our vendors and visitors; and the
community at large from COVID-19.
It should be obvious now that this policy does nothing to safeguard and
protect anyone from covid. A vaccinated employee doesn't prevent the
hazard of covid from entering the workplace. Earlier this month the
district started allowing vaccinated employees to do voluntary testing,
the same testing that the remaining unvaccinated employees have been
subjected to since early November. Since the day those tests started
(on the vaccinated employees) the number of covid positive cases at
the district has skyrocketed. I haven't asked specifically but I would be
willing to bet the vast majority of these positive cases are from
vaccinated district employees who are getting and spreading covid
around the workplace. This being the case, what is the point of the
mandate? Is the district deriving any benefit from the policy at this
point?
I am asking the board to acknowledge that this policy is ineffective and
overall hurtful to the district's mission, vision, and values. Not only did
the district lose high quality long term employees due to the policy, but
the policy itself codifies and encourages an ongoing bias against the
remaining unvaccinated employees, as if they are somehow more
culpable or capable of spreading covid in the workplace. It does this by
placing rules, such as mandatory testing and ongoing mask
requirements (even if/when others don't have to mask anymore), and
restrictions (can't use district gyms). I know it takes a lot of humility and
courage to admit a wrong decision and reverse course, but it is that kind
of character I hope this board will display in rescinding the vaccine
mandate policy. Thank you.
My speech/comment is about an item on the Agenda. I have provided the Agenda Item
Number below.
