• 11/24/21 South Africa first reported a new variant VF
causing a sharp uptick in COVID-19 cases to World
Health Organization (WHO)
• 11/26/21 WHO officially named Omicron ("aa-muh-kraan")
a new variant of concern due to the following:
• Has many mutations, reportedly around 50 in total and 30
on the virus's spike protein.
• May be more transmissible than previous strains.
• May come with an increased risk of reinfection.

by 0.4%, which expectations case counts could rise as
a result of Thanksgiving get-together celebrations.
