WHAT ARE MICROPLASTICS?
• Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines
microplastics as plastic particles less than 5 millimeter
(mm) in dimensions in any one dimension
• California State Water Board defines microplastics in
Drinking Water as a solid, polymeric material, with at
least 3 dimensions measuring between 1 nanometer
(nm) and 5,000 micrometer (µm) (naturally occurring
polymers that have not been chemically modified are
excluded)
• A subset of microparticles
• No formal definition for microplastics in any other matrix

DRIVERS OF MICROPLASTIC RESEARCH
Two legislative mandates for microplastic
management in California:
Senate Bill (SB) 1422 requires implementation
of routine drinking water microplastics
monitoring by 2021
SB 1263 requires development of a
Microplastics Management Strategy of the
California Ocean by 2022

MICROPLASTIC STUDY IN 2021
Authorized by the Ocean Protection Council to inform
Management Strategy for Microplastics in California
Ocean (SB 1263)
Two parts:
1. Identification of sources and pathways of
microplastics in stormwater
2. Evaluate microplastic removal efficiency of
wastewater treatment plant processes

MICROPLASTIC STUDY IN 2021
Central San:
• Pilot a sampling apparatus to collect an in -line sample
for 24 hours
• Collect sample using the autosampler for the same 24-
hour period and compare to pilot in -line sampling
apparatus
• Training video to assist California Association of
Sanitation Agencies (CASA) member agencies on set-
up of collection apparatus and sample collection
- Thank you to: Joe Zumbo and Jim Wan
• Participate in the removal efficiency studies and
monitor raw, primary, and final effluent in 2022

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT
The aquatic thresholds are being developed as a
tiered risk -based framework
• Risk is measured as food dilution and the
translocation potential of microfibers
• Future involvement pending the finalization of
the risk -based framework
