AS POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK
Pollution Prevention Week begins every year, starting on the third Monday in September. This event is
recognized nationally and is used to encourage pollution prevention awareness. Central San has actively
supported Pollution Prevention Week since it started in California in 1993, including adopting a resolution
each year proclaiming Pollution Prevention Week in Central San's service area.
Central San's Pollution Prevention Week activities include:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency
established National Pollution Prevention Week the
third week in September, to celebrate the anniversary of
the Pollution Prevention Act, which passed in 1990, and
established a national policy to prevent or reduce pollution.
This year's Pollution Prevention Week is September 20-26,
2021.

Martinez
From July 2020 to June 2021,
Thom Sullivan visited Central San's
recycled water fill station 248 times.
But it's his commitment to recycled
water that makes him stand out.
Since he does not have a vehicle
that can handle a large water
container, he picks up about 40 r+�
gallons per visit in 5-gallon plastic
water jugs.Way to go Thom!

LAFAYETTE Lafayette School District
SCHOOL DISTRICT The Lafayette School District went above
and beyond the call of duty last year to
support their students. By partnering with
Central San's distance learning programs,
they ensured that every single elementary
student across the entire school district-
all 2,094 of them-got to experience
hands-on wastewater science from a
distance.This monumental achievement
would not have been possible without the
science specialist teachers from across the
► district's four elementary schools:
Jonathan Winter, Cathy Bornfleth,
Mallory Pierce, Molly Shannon, and
Scott Westphal. _

,. Starting in February 2009, Central
San partnered with ten cities and the
��` "' "''•'Tr, Contra Costa County Office of the
l Sheriff to provide pharmaceutical
disposal bins within our service area.
The bins, located at City and County
facilities, provided a safe and
convenient place for households to
dispose of their unwanted or expired
medications, keeping them out of the
water environment. Since the
program's inception, more than
,f 149,000 pounds of pharmaceutical
waste have been collected.

RESOLUTION NO. 2021-051
A RESOLUTION OF THE CENTRAL CONTRA COSTA SANITARY DISTRICT
DECLARING POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK
WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District to protect
public health and the environment; and
WHEREAS, the presence of hazardous substances in homes and businesses in the
Central Contra Costa Sanitary District service area, which could be improperly
discharged to sanitary sewers or storm drains, creates a potential threat to public health
and the environment; and
WHEREAS, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, State Water
Resources Control Board, and the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control
Board support reducing hazardous discharges at the source through more efficient use,
conservation, product substitution, recycling, reuse, and waste reduction, which is
termed pollution prevention; and
WHEREAS, pollution prevention techniques will reduce the amount of hazardous
substances being discharged to sanitary sewers and storm drains; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District accepts and properly disposes of
household and commercially-generated hazardous waste from the cities of Clayton,
Concord, Danville, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, and
Walnut Creek, and the unincorporated communities in central Contra Costa County, and
adopting pollution prevention measures will reduce the amount, cost of handling, and
proper disposal of this waste; and
WHEREAS, since our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility opened in 1997,
over 602,000 residential and small business customers have been served by collecting
more than 42.3 million pounds of hazardous waste, which was either reused, recycled,
or properly disposed of; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District partners with the Contra Costa
County Office of the Sheriff, the communities of Alamo, Clayton, Concord, Danville,
Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek, and
the service organizations of RecycleSmart, Republic Services of Contra Costa County,
and Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery to provide free collection and proper disposal of
more than 149,000 pounds of unwanted or expired residential pharmaceutical waste in
central Contra Costa County since February 2009; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District, a certified green business, is
partnering with other agencies and businesses in the county to certify and recognize
green businesses through the Contra Costa Green Business Program; and

WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District is partnering with the Contra
Costa Clean Water Program to inspect businesses to reduce storm water pollution; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District is partnering with the Mt. View
Sanitary District to provide environmental compliance inspection services to reduce
pollution at its source in their service area; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District conducts and supports programs
to educate customers about pollution prevention and how critical proper use, storage,
and disposal of hazardous substances in the household and workplace are to protecting
the environment; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District offers educational programs in
the areas of water quality, pollution prevention, wastewater treatment, water supply, and
the aquatic life of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta for more than 6,000 elementary,
middle, and high school students in its service area; and
WHEREAS, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District is a Visionary Partner of
Sustainable Contra Costa and conducts its Annual Pollution Prevention Week
Recognition Program, which includes Recycled Water Champions, Water Quality
Community Partners, a Pollution Prevention Partner, and Pollution Prevention Awards
to honor Central San customers that conserve and protect water quality and the
environment, at Sustainable Contra Costa's 1V Annual Leadership In Sustainability
Celebration on the evening of Wednesday, September 22, 2021, as an online event;
and
WHEREAS, Monday, September 20 through Sunday, September 26, 2021 , is
recognized nationally as Pollution Prevention Week.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that it is the policy of the Central Contra Costa
Sanitary District to encourage and promote pollution prevention practices, technologies,
and education that will reduce the discharge of hazardous substances to sanitary
sewers and storm drains; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Directors declares that September 20
through September 26, 2021, be recognized within the Central Contra Costa Sanitary
District as Pollution Prevention Week.
