On April 15, 2021, the B oard of Directors approved the Maintenance A ccess Cover Beautification P roposal. T he proposal provides a low-cost opportunity to update the maintenance access covers to ref lect the beauty of the District's service area, create a positive customer experience with its facilities, include the "C entral San" identifier, and be a good civic neighbor. T he attached design f or B oard approval, will allow staf f to move forward to work with the foundry to create Central S an's new maintenance access covers. B AC K G RO UND Central S an has over 36,700 maintenance access covers throughout its service area which state "C C C S D" rather than "Central S an," which is the official nickname and how best customers would find the District via the internet, social media, or in case of emergency. The "generic diamond" look of Central S an's current maintenance access covers is over 50 years old, appears dated, and includes various f oundry information which is unnecessary. T he new design provides a wonderf ul opportunity to exemplify the beauty of the service area, be a good civic neighbor, help customers better connect with C entral San and the important work the District accomplishes, and easily identif y the agency to contact in the event of an emergency. ALT E RNAT IV E S /C O NS I D E RAT IO NS T he C ommittee could decide not to approve the design or provide other input. A ny future purchases would be the same cost per maintenance access cover as the District pays currently. C O M M UNIT Y O UT RE AC H Nearer the end of 2021, there is an opportunity to compliment C entral S an's 75th anniversary with the release of a new cover design. The final drawing will be created by the foundry based on this design and that drawing will be approved by Central San prior to production. The new design will not affect the strength or functionality of the access covers. The covers are made in two parts, a top and bottom, which are then joined together. This means that all of the current options for pick locations, holes/ no holes, gaskets, etc. will be available, and the new covers will match with the frames we are currently purchasing. Our current product exceeds requirements for strength and friction, and the new cover will be designed to maintain those elements. Any changes necessary to meet these standards will be performed by the foundry.
