BAILEY, GENERAL MANAGER SUBJECT: DISCUSS THE UPCOMING CENTRAL SAN ACADEMY VIRTUAL SESSION Since 2016, Central San has hosted four successful sessions of its citizens' academy, Central San Academy. The annual program has been a popular event for residents in the community, averaging 35 participants per session with a total of 138 "alumni." During the in-person sessions, participants in Central San Academy delve deep into Central San's operations and have the opportunity to meet a variety of staff members —from chemists, to engineers, to plant operators, to managers and executives, and many in between. The classes meet once a week over six or seven weeks in the evenings at Central San's Walnut Creek and Martinez facilities. The curriculum blends classroom learning, group activities, live demonstrations, and a tour of Central San's treatment plant, laboratory, recycled water fill station, and household hazardous waste collection facility to provide a well-rounded look at Central San's range of services. Last March, the Spring 2020 session was postponed due to the pandemic. Given the inability to hold an in- person session in the near future, Central San has decided to transition the Academy to a virtual format. According to a survey distributed in late January, 35 individuals (21 alumni and 14 applicants for past sessions) expressed interest in attending. Based on feedback received from the survey, the Spring 2021 Virtual Central San Academy will be held over two consecutive nights: on Wednesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Attached is a draft curriculum. Staff will be available at the Committee meeting to discuss the plan, receive feedback, and answer questions.
