Swanson A. F tell C. Freitas Jame General Manager ISSUE: The Board of Directors' authorization is required for medical leave of absence without pay in excess of thirty days. RECOMMENDATION: Deny request for extension of medical leave of absence without pay for Erika Liskamm, Engineering Assistant II. FINANCIAL IMPACTS:. None, if the request is denied. ALTERNATIVES/CONSIDERATIONS: Approve an extended medical leave of absence without pay up to October 12, 2010. BACKGROUND: Engineering Assistant II Erika Liskamm has been on a medical leave of absence without pay for a health condition since July 2009. She is ineligible for Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) as she exhausted the twelve weeks of FMLA in 2009 and has not worked sufficient hours to be eligible for it in 2010. She has had multiple leaves of absence and/or reduced work schedules approved since 2005. In consultation with District labor counsel, the District has conducted several interactive process meetings with Ms. Liskamm and accommodated reduced work schedules to the extent possible. Due to her condition, Ms. Liskamm has informed staff that there is no guarantee that she will be able to return this October even if her request is approved. DENY REQUEST FOR EXTENDED MEDICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE WITHOUT PAY FOR ERIKA LISKAMM, ENGINEERING ASSISTANT II The Human Resources Committee reviewed this request at its meeting of June 22, 2010 and recommended that the request be denied. If the Board adopts staffs recommendation, Ms. Liskamm will be separated from employment at the end of the pay period in July. She will receive medical benefits paid by the District through July 2010 and she will be eligible to purchase COBRA benefits with her long-term disability payments.
