Regional Monitoring Program:
• Melissa Foley of the San Francisco Estuary Institute presented an update to the BACWA
Board. The Microplastics three-year effort was wrapped up at the Microplastics Symposium on
October 2, 2019. The study evaluated both wastewater and stormwater. Over 80% of samples for
wastewater were fibers and in storm water; the majority of microplastics were fragments. Research
has not yet been done to understand what the impacts of the microplastics are, just that microplastics
are everywhere. For microplastics, the Regional Monitoring Program is looking to raise funds to
support continued studies. A multiyear planning workshop was held on October 23, 2019 and a
multiyear plan for emerging contaminants was developed. For 2021, the priorities will be stormwater
contaminants of emerging concern, Bay water sampling for flame retardants, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl
substances (PFAS), bisphenols, and toxicology. For 2022, potential studies include toxicology,
trash, bisphenols, and PFAS.
Nutrients:
• Annual group report is due to the Regional Water Board on February 1, 2020. Central San will be
submitting its data to HDR for the report. Presentation given on RABAC (Rotating Activated Bacillus
