BAILEY, GENERAL MANAGER FROM: EMILY BARNETT, COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS MANAGER SUBJECT: RECAP OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION FACILITY 20TH ANNIVERSARY WEEK OCTOBER 16-21, 2017 BACKGROUND In order to increase customer and stakeholder awareness of Central San, staff is tasked with developing an annual signature event that showcases Central San's important programs and services. In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (HHW), a week-long customer engagement drive was held October 16-21, 2017, and a mid -week flagship stakeholder event and tours were held October 18. The Anniversary Collection Drive increased public awareness about the facility and Central San's pollution prevention efforts. The flagship reception, HHW tours, and Treatment Plant tour provided an opportunity for local elected officials and sister agencies to learn more about Central San, which they in turn can share with their communities. EVENT GOALS • Increase customer awareness and engagement with the HHW and Central San's pollution prevention efforts. • Increase new and repeat customers to the HHW. • Provide an opportunity for federal, state and local elected officials/stakeholders to have a "Central San Experience" and interact with our facilities first hand. INTEGRATION WITH DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLAN The 20th Anniversary Collection Drive and flagship stakeholder event was planned during the Fiscal Year 2016-18 Strategic Plan. The HHW realized a nearly 7 -fold increase in new customers compared to the same week the previous year. Central San's outreach efforts were successful, with feedback from customers that they had observed all our different forms of outreach (radio, TV, social media, billboard, and other advertising). ANNIVERSARY FLAGSHIP STAKEHOLDER EVENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS Total Elected Officials/Stakeholders • Over 50 Anniversary Event Highlights • The event provided an opportunity for Central San to recognize our community partners and the leadership that established the HHW. • The event fostered understanding of our pollution prevention programs and the significant role of the HHW amongst local elected officials. Eight of Central San's service area cities had elected, and/or key stakeholders, attend the event to provide recognition. In all, Central San received 10 proclamations/certificates of recognition. Most notably, the City of Concord proclaimed October 18, 2017, as "Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility Day." The following elected officials and/or key stakeholders attended the event: • Brandon Bratcher, District Representative from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier's office. • Cora Young, District Representative from Congressman Mike Thompson. • Sam Reneau from Assemblywoman Catharine Baker's office, presented a joint State resolution. • Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors — Candace Andersen and representatives from Supervisor Karen Mitchoff's office. • City of Concord — Vice -Mayor Edi Birsan and Councilmember Tim McGallian. • Town of Danville — Mayor Renee Morgan. • City of Pleasant Hill — Mayor Michael Harris and Councilmember Sue Noack. • City of Walnut Creek — Councilmember Cindy Silva. • Contra Costa Water District - Board Member Ernie Avila. • Mt.
