Central San Wins Awards at the California (Nater Environment
Association (CWEA) Annual Conference
The CWEA Annual State Awards Event was held on April 28, 2017 in Palm Springs.
Central San won nine awards. Mr. Ed O'Brien, President of the CWEA San Francisco
Bay Section, will be present at the meeting to present the awards to the Board.
First Place Awards
• Plant of the Year (Large)
CWEA recognized Central San in part for its longstanding track record of
exemplary permit compliance with its air, water and recycled water
permits. Central San staff are dedicated to their roles of keeping all aspects and
assets in compliance on a daily basis with a strong synergy of training, teamwork
and enthusiasm.
• Film Festival Training Video of the Year -- Semi-Professional
Central San received this award for the Aeration Turbine Startup training video.

• Safety Program of the Year
CWEA awarded Central San with this prestigious honor for its leadership in the
safety suggestion process, contractor safety program, and for building a strong
safety culture.
• Film Festival Training Video of the Year - Amateur
Central San received this award for the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Thickener
Shutdown Procedure training video.

• Photo of the Year
Central San received this award for its photo of a Wet Weather Pump Pipe

Wet Weather Pump Pipe Replacement
• Gadgets and Gizmos of the Year
Central San received this award for developing a gadget that would preheat and
clean oil used for the secondary clarifier recirculation pump.
A video clip illustrating the gadget invented by the Plant Maintenance Division
staff will be presented during the meeting.
Second Place Award
• Film Festival, Public Education — Semi-Professional
Central San received this award for its "Maintaining the Flow" video, which takes
viewers on a brief tour touching on all aspects of what the collection System
Operations Department does on a daily basis to keep wastewater in the pipes, off
the streets, and out of viewers' homes.

Third Place Awards
• Community Engagement & outreach Project of the Year
Central San was recognized for its 70th Anniversary Community open House
event that brought over 1,000 customers to visit and learn more about Central
San's services and programs.
• Collection System of the Year (Large)
Central San received this award for its extensive preventative maintenance and
safety programs, community educational programs including equipment displays
and presentations to students from experienced and well-trained employees, as
well as its support of sister agencies during mutual aid situations.
