The proposal includes planning, technical/economic feasibility evaluation, and design of an innovative hydrothermal process that manufactures biofuels from wet wastewater solids and other imported high-strength wastes without the need for energy intensive drying. For Central San, this technology may provide an innovative opportunity to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the lifecycle cost of processing wastewater solids. If processed with this technology, wastewater solids in the United States alone could yield the energy of more than 2 billion gallons of gasoline equivalent per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year.
