c) Department of Energy Accepts Water Environment & Reuse
Foundation Pilot Waste-to-Energy Proposal
On December 28, 2016, the Department of Energy announced that the Water
Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) pilot waste-to-energy project proposal in
collaboration with Central San, Genifuel Corporation, Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory, and other partners was one of six proposals accepted from across the
country. The proposal includes planning, technical/economic feasibility evaluation, and
design of an innovative hydrothermal process that manufactures biofuels from wet
wastewater solids and other imported high-strength wastes without the need for energy
intensive drying. For Central San, this technology may provide an innovative opportunity
to both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the lifecycle cost of processing
wastewater solids. If processed with this technology, wastewater solids in the United
States alone could yield the energy of more than 2 billion gallons of gasoline equivalent
per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 million metric tons of carbon
dioxide equivalents per year.
