UPCOMING EVENT
h) Central San to Celebrate "Bring a Child to Work Day" — Friday,
April 1, 2016
Central San will celebrate "Bring a Child to Work Day" on Friday, April 1, 2016.
Sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc. of Central San staff of all ages will be welcome.
There will be a meet and greet in the Multi -Purpose Room in the morning, along with a
discussion session to ask children what they think their parents, grandparents, etc. do at
Central San. The children will participate in a tree planting ceremony directly afterwards
so that they will be able to monitor the tree growth every time they visit Central San.
Children ages 11 and older will then be given guided tours of the treatment plant, lab and
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. There will also be demonstrations of the
vehicles used by the District's Collection crews. A safe lab station will also be set up in
the Multi -Purpose Room for children to participate in simple experiments. Towards the
end of the event, the children will be able to participate in field activities out at Flushing
Meadows and we will close out the day with Central San providing lunch.
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the day, staff will also be welcome
to give their children personal tours of their work areas.

i) Central San Selected to Receive the Champion of Youth
Advocacy Award from the Workforce Development Board of
Contra Costa County
Central San was recently notified that it will receive the prestigious "Champion of Youth
Advocacy Award" from the County's Workforce Development Board. The District is being
recognized as a result of the efforts outlined in the attached letter prepared by Human
Resources Manager Teji O'Malley describing the District's long-standing program for
hiring summer students and providing opportunities for students through the Cooperative
Education Program with various local universities. Ms. Gina Del Carlo, spokesperson for
the Workforce Development Board Earn & Learn East Bay, stated that "This formal
recognition serves to encourage other partners to follow [the District's] lead and
dedication to the students in our community."
The award will be presented during the second annual Workforce Development Board
Earn & Learn East Bay kickoff on March 4, 2016. Board Member Mike McGill will attend
the event to accept the award on behalf of the District.

For over 25 years, the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District has been proud to provide
opportunities for students to fill summer/seasonal positions and co-op opportunities. The
students are given an opportunity to gain hands-on job experience which they can use
as they progress in their careers. Additionally, students who fill co-op positions develop
vital skills specific to their chosen career field and gain invaluable experience related to
their areas of study.
Each year the District hires approximately 30 students during the summer months (June
through September) and approximately 8-10 students (co-ops) through the Cooperative
Education Program with various local universities.
The seasonal positions are assigned throughout the District and assist permanent staff
with the day-to-day operations. They are assigned to our Buildings and Grounds,
trades/mechanical shops, the Laboratory, the treatment plant, Engineering, as well as
our Administration office. The summer/seasonal program provides undergraduate
students the opportunity to work in various areas of the District. To be considered for
these opportunities, students must be full-time students in the spring and fall of the
summer they are hired. They must also be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid
California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving history. The salaries for summer
student positions range from $13.00 - $18.00 an hour depending upon the qualifications
and assignment. As an incentive for the same students to return the following year, the
District offers a $1.00 an hour increase each summer to a maximum of 4 summers.
To be considered for the Co-op Program, students must be actively enrolled in an
undergraduate or graduate program and are mainly assigned to our Engineering
Department and the Laboratory. They must have junior, senior, or graduate standing in
a four year college or university with major coursework in civil, mechanical, or chemical
engineering; or biology, chemistry, or biochemistry.

Under close supervision, the co-ops perform trainee or apprentice -level professional
work related to their field of study. The engineering positions work on planning,
designing, and construction of the District's wastewater treatment plant, collection
system, and related facilities. The laboratory positions perform a variety of chemical,
biochemical, bacteriological, microbiological, and toxicity analyses of water, receiving
waters, wastewater, and related solids and by-products relevant to wastewater
collection, treatment, and disposal. The co-op positions require a full-time, six month
commitment. They are compensated at an hourly rate of $24.00.
The District is very proud to offer these opportunities to students within our community
and it has been a mutually beneficial program for both the District and the students. In
fact, many of the co-op students have been hired as full time permanent staff once they
have completed their studies.
If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding either of these
programs, please contact me at (925) 229-7309.
