Inspection
Per Plant Maintenance Superintendent Dave Robbins, Carbon Steel Inspection (CSI)
was paid to inspect the tube thickness of the No. 2 Waste Heat Boiler, which uses heat
from burning sludge in the furnace to generate steam. CSI provided the lowest quote of
the three quotes that staff obtained. The No. 2 boiler is associated with the No. 2
furnace, which is offline this year. Maintenance was performed at this time to take
advantage of that furnace being offline.
The Waste Heat Boilers are 37 years old and, as part of the District's expanding
Condition -Based Maintenance and Asset Management efforts, this is the first time the
tube thickness has been tested. Each boiler has 1,272 tubes, and the results of the
testing indicated that only seven tubes had to be plugged due to decreased wall
thickness. Staff plans to test a portion of the tubes every five years.
