Central Contra Costa Sanitary District
April 15, 2015
TO: FINANCE COMMITTEE
VIA: ROGER S. BAILEY, GENERAL MANAGER
FROM: DAVID HEATH, DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION
SUBJECT: IT DATA CENTER WATER DAMAGE UPDATE
At the March 5th Board meeting I provided you a presentation regarding the water
damage to the District's IT data equipment center in the basement of POD based on
what was known at the time. Member Pilecki requested an update at a recent Finance
Committee meeting including a summary of the loss to the District.
As previously reported a coffee machine in the multi - purpose room in POD failed the
evening of February 20th and leaked water onto the floor and through the ceiling below
into the IT data equipment center damaging several expensive pieces of data
equipment.
At this point all damaged equipment has been obtained and replaced at a total cost of
$212,132 per the attached schedule. This is being paid for by the insurance fund and
our self- insured retention for property losses is $250,000. In addition there was
approximately 240 hours of overtime hours incurred by from IT staff to mitigate the
damage and restore our systems expeditiously. This resulted in about $24,000 in
additional costs to be absorbed by the operations and maintenance budget.
The District's Engineering Division has installed drip pans above the equipment to
protect the equipment from future water damage and is in the process of evaluating the
relocation of the data center to a less hazardous location. There is also a budget line
item in the upcoming CIB process for Board consideration.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or need additional information.
