Menesini Former Board Member Mario M. Menesini passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the age of 91. Dr. Menesini retired from the Board on December 7, 2012, after having served on the District Board of Directors for 20 years. Born and raised in Martinez, Mario earned a Bachelor's Degree in Geology and Zoology from St. Mary's College, a Master's Degree in Marine Biology from University of the Pacific, and a Doctorate in Science Education from U.C. Berkeley. He taught chemistry, physics and physiology in local high schools and universities, and authored and co- authored several text books. During his two decades on the Board, Mario actively supported the District's continual upgrade of services and facilities, including the Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility, the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, the Environmental Laboratory, and the new Collection System Operations Headquarters. Perhaps his greatest contribution is the fervor with which he championed Central San's public outreach and student education programs. Mario actively served as a volunteer for several other community groups that complemented his service at Central San. He was a co- founder of the Environmental Alliance in 1990, formed to provide assistance to teachers and schools with environmental education programs. He participated in the U.S. Navy Concord Arms Depot Restoration Advisory Board. The knowledge he gained there was put to use when Central San began evaluating sewerage and recycled water alternatives for the proposed development of the Concord Naval Weapons Station. Mario participated in the San Francisco Estuary Project where the impacts of human development to the Bay Delta system are considered and evaluated. And he was a member of the Contra Costa County Historical Society and arranged for a display of the history of the District to be featured in their downtown Martinez building. Whenever asked how he was doing by staff at Central San, Mario's response was, "Like a tiger!" That tiger will be missed.
