Collection System Operations g) Sewage Overflow on Los Cerros Avenue, Walnut Creek On Saturday, December 29, 2012, there was a sewage overflow that caused interior damage to two homes located at 52 and 55 Los Cerros Avenue in Walnut Creek. The cause of the overflow was a root blockage and the estimated volume of the overflow was 250 gallons. Neither home had an overflow protection device. Initially, the homeowners had called out plumbers to check their lateral sewers for blockages. Finding none, the plumbers advised the homeowners to contact the District. When the CSO on -call crew arrived on the scene, the homeowners, through their insurance companies, already had restoration and clean -up companies there or en route. Because of the damage to the home at 55 Los Cerros Avenue, the District arranged to have the homeowner, an 82 -year old widow and her dogs, stay at a nearby hotel for two nights while it was being cleaned. There was less damage to the home at 52 Los Cerros Avenue, and the homeowner declined to stay at a hotel. The homeowners' insurance companies are taking care of clean -up and restoration. District staff is monitoring this restoration. Staff expects the insurance companies to submit claims for damages resulting from the overflow.
