Update on Storm Damage
c) Update on Mountain View Drive Sinkhole in Lafayette
On Sunday, December 2, 2012, high creek flows combined with storm debris washed out
a portion of Mountain View Drive where it crosses Lafayette Creek. Along with the road
and culvert, the washout destroyed a 30 -foot long portion of CCCSD's 8 -inch sewer and
an EBMUD 6 -inch water main. A 12 -inch EBMUD transmission pipe and PG &E gas main
were damaged.
CCCSD collection system crews set up a temporary pumped bypass to provide sewer
service to approximately 80 homes upstream of the broken sewer. Approximately 2600
gallons of raw sewage overflowed into Lafayette Creek before the temporary bypass
became operational. The City of Lafayette hired Pacific Engineering to stabilize the road
bed and creek until repairs could be made.
Initially, the City estimated that the road repair would take several months to complete.
However, after further consideration, the City of Lafayette decided to repair the street as
an emergency project. The City retained C. C. Myers of Rancho Cordova to rebuild the
road and restore utilities by Christmas. Myers started working around the clock on
December 11, 2012. By Friday afternoon, December 14, Myers had replaced the
damaged 96 -inch corrugated metal culvert with 120 -inch reinforced concrete storm drain
pipe. Rebuilding the roadbed and restoring utilities began Friday evening. By late
Saturday, December 15, Myers had installed approximately 40 feet of new 8 -inch sewer
to replace the section of sewer destroyed during the storm. On Monday, December 17,
CCCSD crews cleaned and televised the sewer upstream and downstream of the repair.
Gravity sewer service was restored to the neighborhood by late morning.
