HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.a.2) (Handout)l -a.Z Board Meeting of May 3, 2012 (Nandoa-�) Additional Written Announcements: Pharmaceutical Disposal f) Recent Efforts to Support Proper Pharmaceutical Disposal in Contra Costa and Alameda Counties The District's Pollution Prevention Program Coordinator Melody LaBella was invited to speak at a couple of recent events related to proper pharmaceutical disposal and the impacts to the water environment. On Saturday, April 28, 2012, Ms. LaBella gave a statement at State Senator Mark Desaulnier's Press Conference at the Antioch Police Department to acknowledge the DEA's National Drug Take -back Day. Also in attendance was Contra Costa County Board Supervisor Mary Piepho. On Monday, April 30, 2012, Ms. LaBella gave a statement at Alameda County Board of Supervisors President Nate Miley's 1 st Stakeholder Meeting in support of their Safe Drug Disposal Ordinance that will require pharmaceutical manufacturers to set up collection programs for unwanted medications. Ms. LaBella was asked to attend this meeting in particular to address environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in the environment and to dispel claims by the pharmaceutical manufacturers that trash disposal is the solution. At both events, Ms. LaBella's statement included information about the success of the District's Pharmaceutical Collection Program, which has collected over 18 tons of unwanted medications in just over three years.
