ISSUE: Modifications to job classification descriptions require Board approval.
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt the revised job classification for Information Systems
Specialist.
FINANCIAL IMPACTS: None.
ALTERNATIVES /CONSIDERATIONS: Do not adopt the changes or modify as desired.
BACKGROUND: At the time a position becomes vacant an opportunity is provided to
review the job description, review the organization and recommend changes as needed
or desired. Due to the upcoming retirement of the Information Systems Specialist, staff
has reviewed the job description and is proposing modifications to reflect the current
technological advances that have occurred since the last job description update in
2008, as well as modified experience and education requirements. This review is a part
of the new Information Technology Administrator's audit of the District's information
systems.
The District communicated its intent to modify the job description to Local One on
March 5, 2011, and Local One did not raise any concerns or objections to the proposed
changes.
This matter has been reviewed by the Human Resources Committee at its meeting on
March 8, 2012.
RECOMMENDED BOARD ACTION: Adopt the revised job classification for
Information Systems Specialist.

DEFINITION
Provide system administration and computer applications support services for the District's
computer, information network, and communication systems.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Implement and maintain computer hardware /software system(s); maintain and
update a comprehensive hardware and software documentation manual.
• Coordinate with vendors to ensure that the system(s) undergo periodic
maintenance, upgrades, testing to ensure hardware and software problems are
corrected before roll out.
• Operate, install, monitor, and maintain network system software and hardware
including operating systems, databases and data communications control systems
and other utility programs.
• Maintain network, utilities, database, and interfaces. Perform regular periodic
backups of the system, routine system cleanup, and system recovery as necessarv.
• Provide technical support and user training. Write custom MS Access reports and
SQL queries /scripts to support special department requirements such as input
fields, application UI changes, data translation, conversion, reformatting and
integration with other district systems.

Schedule routine maintenance and provide support of the CMMS and other District

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices, methods, and techniques used in the operation, maintenance,
and administration of desktop PC's, servers, networks, and telecommunication
systems.
• Relational database development, pri nci plesPFi RGO pies, procedures, and techniques
used in MS SQL, MS Access and documentation
of systemsys+ development work.
Computer systems technology and vocabulary.
Safety hazards and appropriate precautions applicable to work assignments.
Ability to:
Understand, maintain, update and troubleshoot hardware, software, network and
databases. Regularly maintain and update documentation of system changes and
record of work performed. OR aGentinuous basis analyze, ideRtify, iRterpret know,
ebserve-- problem selvimewer— understand, and explain -- GeMpufer-
• Sit at a desk or computer work station for long periods of time on a continuous
basis; twist to reach equipment in surrounding work area, perform simple grasping,

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the
required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience
Two years of experience with networked personal computer hardware, software, and
peripheral equipment, including MS Access, MS SQL database and systemtwe
yea s of e er +.�,ee; ; administration preferably with CMM5.and suppeFt of a
system.
Education
Equivalent to an associate's deqree from an accredited college with major work in
computer science or a closely related field.
- LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
