d) Complimentary Letter Received About a Recent Sewer
Repair
Construction staff in the Collection System Operations (CSO) Department
recently completed a difficult repair of a damaged 6 -inch sewer located in the
backyard of a home in Martinez. During a TV inspection, crews found that a
portion of the clay sewer was missing and a void had developed around the
sewer. Staff determined that an internal "no dig" repair was not feasible and that
an open -cut repair would be required.
The repair was difficult because of the limited access to and around the sewer,
and the depth of the excavation. The sewer was located on a slope behind a
retaining wall. Due to the limited access, CSO construction crews had to excavate
the 12 -foot deep trench by hand digging. Excavated soil had to be moved away
from and returned to the trench by wheelbarrow. It took the crews approximately
one week to excavate and shore the trench, repair the sewer, backfill the trench,
and restore the backyard.
A few days after completing the repair, staff was pleased to receive a letter from
the homeowners commending the CSO construction crews for performing
excellent work under difficult conditions without any inconvenience to the
homeowners. This letter was distributed to the Board Members on November 21,
2011.
The CSO employees working on this sewer repair were: Mark Goss, Robbie
Robinson, Greg Collins, Lou Hernandez, Les Szmidt, Jason Crowe, Mike Klubben
and Justin Stoops.
