SUBJECT:
May 7, 2007 Finance Committee Meeting
The following question was outstanding from the prior Board Budget and Finance
Committee meeting. The question and response is provided below:

A full report on tree trimming at the District was requested along with the
total number of hours included on the most current invoice.
Discounting small trees, shrubs, hedges, and bushes that are trimmed by the
Buildings and Grounds crew, there are approximately 269 trees on District
property in Martinez that require professional trimming. Due to many trees not
being included in the scope of work over the last few years, combined with the
fact that the trees are simply growing larger, 222 trees were identified as being
due for trimming in 2007. Approximately 140 of the 222 trees were eucalyptus
trees that, because of their shallow root system, pose an additional challenge,
especially as they grow larger, to prevent them from becoming top-heavy. Also,
included in the 2007 Expert Tree Service invoice, was the work necessary to
remove two large eucalyptus trees that were obscuring traffic signs and three
other trees that were removed for various reasons.
It took 15 days to complete the work during the period of 2/19/07 to 3/15/07. The
total labor hours expended were 567.5 hours. With an hourly rate of $65 per
hour, the total for the work performed was $36,887.50.
Because of the "catch-up" that was accomplished this year, it is anticipated that
the expenditure for tree trimming in 2008 will be approximately half of the 2007
expenditure.
